On June 1, The New York Times published an interesting opinion by Robert Reich, the former U.S. Secretary of Labor. In this piece, “Entrepreneur or Unemployed,” Professor Reich focused on a recent report on entrepreneurial activity by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.
The May 2010 “Kauffman Index of Entrepreneurial Activity” reports that in 2009 new business start-ups reached their highest level in last 14 years. Professor Reich sees this as good news, yet he also believes that high unemployment is the key driver in this trend. He says, “Booted off company payrolls, millions of Americans had no choice but to try selling themselves.”
No doubt, this can be a challenge, and for some, an unwelcomed choice. Moving into the new world of self-employment as a “contingent” worker will not be comfortable for everyone, especially when there’s little business infrastructure support and no safety net below.
This is one of the primary reasons I am so proud of the opportunity we offer here at Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. We offer associates an infrastructure for building a long-term future and what some might describe as their own “American Dream.” Those who come to PPD to become independent associates, sell themselves on their own vision for success. Our offering is a “free enterprise” opportunity that is more appealing today than perhaps it’s ever been.
